General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) was the Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between 9 th June 1998 – 29 th May 1999. General Abdulsalami Abubakar transferred power to an elected President in May 1999, being the brain behind Nigeria’s present democracy.
Prior to his appointment as the Head of States, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar was the Chief of Defence Staff, Defence Headquarters between 1993-1998. Before that, he was the General Commanding Officer of the 1st Mechanised Division between 1990-1991 and the Army Chief of Plan and Policy, Defence Headquarters between 1991-1993.
General Abdulsalami Abubakar is a recipient of numerous international, continental and national awards and medals. Some of which includes: the International Gold Medal of the Economic Community of West African States, Rainbow/Push Coalition Peace Prize, Oder of the Star of Ghana amongst others.
General Abdulsalami Abubakar is presently the Head of Commonwealth Observer Group.
